The Cuvilly Program at Chaminade Julienne High School was created to help students with learning disabilities. The teachers in this program are dedicated to helping their students everyday and adding a special touch to CJ. We asked the teachers of this program a few questions about their job and what it is like to work in their field. Here is our third teacher highlight!

1. Can you talk a little bit about your job and what your primary roles and responsibilities are in that position?

I am an intervention specialist for the Cuvilly department here at Chaminade Julienne. My primary role is to help students who are IEP, ISP, and Action plans to make sure they are receiving the services they need to be successful in the classroom. I also assist teachers and help with work modifications and adaptations.

2. Why did you choose to pursue this occupation?

I have always enjoyed being a teacher but when I had the opportunity to work at a behavioral school it made me want to be a special education teacher because I thought that is where I could really help and make a huge difference in students' lives.

3. What are the most fulfilling or rewarding aspects of your job?

I would say the teachable moments are the most fulfilling when you are in front of the class or work with a student one on one and you see that light bulb go on and they have it.

4. What are some of the greatest challenges you face in your position?

I think some of the greatest challenges, but also some fun is finding ways to adapt or explain concepts and material in a different way where all students can understand and participate.

5. Is there anything you want others to know about your work and your students?

I love my job and working here at CJ in the Cuvilly program. They say if you love what you do then it is not work. If that is the case I have not worked in 6 years and I have had a lot of fun.

6. Are there any misconceptions you would like to see corrected?

That students with disabilities can do anything. They are an integral part of CJ and the success that CJ has in and out of the Classroom.

Thank you so much, Mr. Gutendorf for sharing your insights and some of your experiences at CJ!!
